It’s You I Like!

I am confident enough in my doghood to admit that I love Mr. Rogers. I know he is no longer with us physically, but he lives on at PBS.

Why do I like Mr. Rogers? Because he’s the closest to a dog that a human ever got.

Mr. Rogers always welcomed Mr. McFeely. Dogs LOVE when the mailman comes. Mr. Rogers loves everyone just the way they are. Dogs are the same.

I know some people make fun of Mr. Rogers because he wasn’t macho or aggressive, but no one can say that Mr. Rogers didn’t love them. For that reason he is my hero.

It’s too bad that more humans aren’t like Mr. Rogers. But then again, if you were, you wouldn’t need us animals in your life, would you?

In honor of the Mr. Rogers philosophy, I offer you the following:

IT’S YOU I LIKE

By Fred M. Rogers
© 1970

It’s you I like,
It’s not the things you wear,
It’s not the way you do your hair–
But it’s you I like.
The way you are right now,
The way down deep inside you–
Not the things that hide you,
Not your toys–
They’re just beside you.

But it’s you I like–
Every part of you,
Your skin, your eyes, your feelings
Whether old or new.
I hope that you’ll remember
Even when you’re feeling blue
That it’s you I like,
It’s you yourself,
It’s you, it’s you I like.

It\’s You I Like

  1. We all love Mr. Rogers at our house! He was such a kind man. Did you know his mom made those sweaters in his closet? We liked when he fed his fish and there was a twinkling sound.

We think if everyone was like Mr. Rogers then they would need animals even more to love them and guard them and play with them. And the people would make sure that there were no sad or homeless or abused animals. Everyone, people and animals alike, would have good warm beddies to sleep in and all the food they needed and toys to play with, too. What a wonderful world that would be!

You’re a hero, too, Rumpy! Love, RainbowCats
