June Buggie Rants About Animal Rights!

MEOW!  My name is June Buggie and I have something to say!

.

I want to talk to you people that are lovers of animals and supporters of animal rights.  People, it’s time you stopped arguing amongst yourselves and joined together to get stuff done!

For you I have two little stories.

STORY 1: In the 1970s the US was voting on a Constitutional Amendment called the Equal Rights Amendment.  It would give women equal rights.  And for awhile there it was doing good.  But religious groups, some business folks and some states got together and worked to defeat it.  They told women they’d have to be drafted and fight in the military like men.  They wouldn’t be able to be supported by their husbands.  And they’d have to use unisex bathrooms.

What happened?  Support fell off and the amendment died.  So here we are 30 years later.  Women still make on average 77% of what men do in comparable jobs.  For women of color the disparity is even greater.  And have you noticed Congress lately?  Yeah, it’s a Boy’s Club with a few women here and there.

STORY 2: After the Supreme court ruled on Roe v. Wade and abortion became legal, religious groups banded together to overturn the ruling.  And this was no small feat!  We’re talking about some religious affiliations that were preaching on Sunday the other religions were going to Hell, then standing firm with those others at abortion clinics to protest and pray.

What happened?  Their collaboration has resulted in more restrictive laws in several states.  They’ve managed to file numerous lawsuits, some of which are working their way up to the Supreme Court.  And they’ve supported political candidates.  By the way, do you know which Republican candidate for president is NOT pro-life?

Ya see, there’s more people in the US and around the world that love animals now than at any other time in history, yet you can’t get it together to pass something like The Pet Safety and Protection Act (H.R. 2256) or The Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety Act (H.R. 835/S. 707)!  These are just two examples of pending legislation that would help us animals tremendously!

Yeah, I know you love animals!  You’ve depressed everyone on your Facebook friends list with your repeated posting of pictures of animals “To Be Destroyed!!!!”  You’ve had people unfriend you because of your graphic pictures of animal abuse and neglect.  You’ve asked everyone you know to vote in contests and donate to chip-ins.

But let’s face it, what we NEED is a UNITED front to pass legislation!  And folks, we just don’t have that right now.

What we have is alot of bickering back and forth about whose heart is pure enough to participate in the movement.  *rolls eyes*

You don’t support the Humane Society of the US because they are working with Michael Vick.  You don’t support People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals because Ingrid Newkirk has publicly stated she supports euthanasia.  And I don’t know WHY you don’t like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, but I’m sure you’ll think of something!

And in the meantime, we’re dying.  By the thousands.  Every day.  And even worse, thousands of us live in conditions so horrible that we wish we were dead.

People, we’re depending on YOU to pass the laws we need to make things better for us!  I’m not telling you to sing Kumbaya with Vick and Newkirk, but I am asking you to consider what the ultimate goal is here.  Then put your personal feelings aside and all join together.  Please!  For us animals!

Because 30 years from now, the Animal Rights Movement needs to look like the Pro-life Movement, not the ERA Movement.

And if Michael Vick getting all cuddly with Rumpy convinces one kid to take his dog off a chain or to not engage in dog-fighting, I say, “Vick, have your people contact my people.”

MEOW!

  1. Bravo, June Buggie, Bravo!!! * applause* I think that the circumstances around us, animals have been changing little by little , but still, they are not enough and lots of animals end up having sad endings. We need more strong fixed animal rights for us in human society and for that, as you said, ” A UNITED FRONT” is essential!!! Your serious face sends a passionate message to us!!! 🙂

  6. What a thoughtful and smart post–thanks for the history lesson.

I think sometimes the things we are trying to REALLY overcome get so overwhelming, we resort to infighting to let off some steam. And meanwhile, as you say, animals die. Let’s stop the yattering and get to the lobbying, fostering, and volunteering!

  7. I can’t understand how anyone wouldn’t want the best for us animals?

  8. Wow, June Buggie, you sure know how to tell it like it is. I couldn’t agree more. Why is it that humans are so much more concerned with what divides them rather than on what unites them?

Pass the freakin’ laws and argue semantics, over bickies, another time.

  10. June Buggie, I’m not sure why I’m supporting what a cat says, but if all of us animals don’t stick together how can we expect people to do it? -Bongo

  16. Hi RumpyDog,
Thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday. I would love to share a few words about PDE to educate and get the word out that there is hope! I have a handful of posts dedicated to my personal battle (I should probably get around to organizing those in a separate blog page/tab for easier access). Please contact me via email (address is on my blogger profile page) and let me know the details on how and what you’d like me to contribute to your blog. Sincere thanks!
