Welcome to this week’s edition of Hisses and Purrs, our regular feature where we run down the good, and the not-so-good, in animal welfare around the world.
Alright, Hissy, are you ready?

Hisses to the US House of Representatives for passing a Farm Bill that included the dreadful King Amendment. This amendment overrules any state regulations regarding the care of animals. Seems like Republicans are all about States’ rights…. except when they’re not.
Hisses to Huntingdon, Quebec, Mayor Stephane Gendron, who recently made comments about accelerating when he sees a stray cat in the road. He also said he he recently backed over a kitten. He is now being investigated by the The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Gendron has since apologized for his comments.
Hisses to the over 150 people arrested in the US this past week as a part of “Operation Wild Web,” which identified online wildlife trafficking. The operation involved involving US Fish and Wildlife and investigators from 16 states. Items seized under “Operation Wild Web” included pelts from Sumatran tigers, zebra, leopards, and jaguars, whale teeth, ivory from walrus and elephants, and live birds.
Oh Dog! I’d like to sell them all to a laboratory for scientific research!
June Buggie, give us some good news!

Purrs to Kunal Kapoor, Bollywood film actor, for urging India’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare to ban the import and sale of cosmetics that have been tested on animals in other countries.
Purrs to The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association-Rural Area Veterinary Services for providing free veterinary services this summer at the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Indian Reservations in North Dakota.
Purrs to Bazz the black Labrador Retriever, who was trained by Australian beekeeper Josh Kennett to sniff out a serious bee disease called American foulbrood. There’s no cure known at present, so the only way to get a handle on the disease is to quarantine contagious bees.
Purrs to the New York firefighter who saved a dog that climbed over the window guard and became trapped on a window ledge. This guy is my new hero! Here’s a video of the rescue filmed by an observer:
.
Do you have any hisses or purrs to dole out this week?
.
And don’t forget to vote daily for your favorite blogs in the Dogtime Petties Awards. I’m voting for The Creative Cat as best cat blog and Animal Shelter Volunteer as best cause blog.
Oh I love that film of the firefighter rescuing the puppy! Yay FDNY!
Isn’t it wonderful? I tried to find the firefighter’s name but could not.
Rumpy indeed not only hisses to that cat killing moron but how about a cocked dog leg too!! And we saw that amazing rescue on the tv here in Australia too…he is a hero indeed π
Fozziemum x
I agree. Let’s have a worldwide pee on him!
Raise it high Rumpy π
You can tell it’s too early for me. I read that as ‘cooked dog leg’ and got very confused/indignant. π Agreed, though. What a jerk.
Which one my friend?
Hahahahahaah oh god know…I would cook my leg before a dog!! I love an early morning or late night mis-read do it allll the time..yep he is one jerk for sure…karma though it will get him π
One hopes!
Yes …!
Oooooh!!!! The New York firefighter is fabulous!!!! And this video makes my day much happier!!!! Very heart warming one! I’d love to thank all those humans who helped rescuing the dog! Thanks for letting us show the film, June Buggie! π
MEOW! Have a great day Kevin. -June Buggie
Awww that rescue video was so amazing and cute!!! Whee love it when whee hear the good news! Whee want to send more hisses about the badger cull here in the UK. It is so very wrong.
Nutty, Nacho, Buddy & Basil
xxxx
The Badger Cull deserves lots of hisses!
We seem to have a serious problem with stupied mayors right now. Our mayor in Toronto and now this Quebec guy. *shakeshead* The media was playing it all night so at least a lot of people know now! Another good reason to VOTE Canadians!
We love this weekly feature!
It’s a problem here in the US too. Ugh!
I stopped my breathing as I saw the video – a big hug for the fire fighters!
That was fantastic!
Great video!
I agree! Hooray for the bystander that made it!
Thank you for the wonderful video of the dog being rescued–because the hisses were really awful!! xo
They always are π¦
You are Soooooo Right… that NYFD guy is a HERO fur sure. He did EVERYTHINGY RIGHT with that rescue. BRAVO.
Makes ya wanna move to NY and climb out a window.
there’s nothing to like about the hisses…
I don’t understand humans cruelty towards any living creature
and I am glad I don’t…I would not like the energy inside me…
Wonderful post…I liked the video,
Thank you for always sharing the good and bad…we need to see both..
Take Care…

Nice dog rescue, but I don’t understand the paople that make such a noise. Trying to scare the dog? The firefighter is great. The dog doesn’t seem to be one of the most clever dogs though. The way he was looking at the treats. Okay, maybe he’s well-behaved. *throws a critical glance at her three greedy omnivores*
Thanks!
I am appalled at that Huntingdon Quebec Mayor!! Let me say this is NOT how Canadians act in general. We love our 4 leggeds & many of us work in feral resecue or at least feeding & caring for homeless 4 leggeds!!!
My ‘PURR’ goes out to my Vet Dr. David Gomez for being the kindest & gentlest Vet ever & for always putting the 4 leggeds welfare first!! he is the Canadain ‘James Herriot’!!!!
Sherri-Ellen & Nylablue.
Woof-hooo, FDNY!!! I love ya and miss ya!!!
So mad about the Farm Bill including the King amendment. Seriously, it really seems the Republicans just don’t care about the States’ rights…
I think Stephane Gendron is not sorry he did those things. He’s just sorry there was backlash about his idiotic comments. >:-(
I agree. That NYFD person is a true hero. I wish there were more like him in the world.
My dogs lay alot of poop. Maybe we should send a crate or so of it and dump it on the idiot that boasted about running over a defenseless kitten. How sick. If he said it to be “funny”, even more disgusting.
apparently he was attempting humor while discussing the issue of homeless cats in his town
It’s lovely to see the rescue! It’s fascinating that the dog can sniff out disease in bees and he has his very own suit – that’s cool!
I am glad you end with the purrs π The hisses made me angry!!
Yeah to the NYFD!
I am with you on what should happen to all your hisses.
Yea for operation wildlife web!! And the firefighter was pawsome! Luvluvluv your Hisses and Purrs posts. I may not see it the day you post but I always read it. Thank you for all the research you do to bring is this information, paw pats, Savannah
re the Farm Bill. Do you mean how it is now “an act of terror” for animal activists to film undercover at “processing plants”…? because I heard about that, and want it re–effin’–pealed ASAP. Enough to bang a drum–get a PETA march going locally…
